Kent Marine RO Unit maintenance

We have an older (2008 model year?) .  These are my notes on use and maintenance.
  •  TDS Meter.  Measure tap water, then the RO purified water.  The
  • Rejection rate.  Besides having a good TDS percentage, the rate of water being rejected as waste is a good indicator that the membrane is clogged and needs to be replaced.  If you start seeing very little RO clean water compared to gallons of waste water, it's time to change the membrane.  Also a good time to change the carbon and pre-filters.
From the Kent Marine site:
The KENT Marine full size reverse osmosis units are available with TFC or Hi-S (High Silicate removal) membranes. The units include a 1-micron sediment pre-filter and a solid carbon block pre-filter rated to remove up to 2 ppm chlorine for 3,750 gallons.

Replacement Carbon Filter:  Important because it reduces chlorine which is bad for RO membranes.

You only need to open the membrane housing when you are going to replace the membrane. It has a screw-on cap on the right hand end of it.

Thanks Rob.  Are the Membranes enclosure sealed, or do you open it to replace the membrane only?

These are the instructions for the dual canister systems. If yours has three canisters please let me know and I can send you those instructions. The blue canister units are actually rather old units but the cartridges have never changed so you can still get replacement cartridges for the unit.

Are these available online or for download?  I need some general info about a used ro unit I bought.  I can't find the model number, but I believe it's a 50 gpd unit, similar to the one on this page, but with blue filter housings.

Also,  besides a TDS meter reading, how do I know if the unit is working?

Bob,
I am not sure what membrane you have in your system. You would need to pull the membranes out, or measure the it and compare to the FilmTec Spec sheet for residential. Residential membranes are all usually standard 2.5" x 11.75".

Stray Volts

Do not walk barefoot near your aquarium. The article describes the problem, along with discussion and solutions.

More info as it becomes available... For now I'll just have to be careful, and wear shoes!

Protein Skimming 101

We now skim excess proteins and other waste from our tank water via a protein skimmer.

Now an interesting twist. There are tons of favorable reviews for a brand called Reef Octopus. My local fish shop (LFS) had this brand, so I buy said product. Now, the labels on my item point me to this site:

http://www.proteinskimmer.com.cn/c/cn/index.asp

But this site looks like the original. So, what's up??? Something (ptp) smells fishy...

More to come.

Update.. The guys from proteinskimmer.com.cn responded back that they are the same company.

Clean water from our tap

I've been struggling with providing an environment where invertebrates can live happily. My experience so far, not so good. Snails die, anemones die. Fish thrive, hermit crabs are doing well.

Water quality seems okay, but with the inverts not happy, my habitat is limited.

In an effort to address the incoming water quality issue I have researched and found two camps: Clean via Reverse Osmosis systems which are costly, or some other method. I don't want to dive in to the R.O. world just yet, since those systems can run in to the hundreds, so I am left with another option that seems promising:

Mechanical/chemical filter processes ala "Britta". Happily, I found a source for a DIY solution that may be just the ticket. In a nutshell this approach basically has you build from PVC and filter media a large scale "Britta-Like" filter.

Here's the link: Make your own marine-grade water filter. And here is a link to the recommended polymer pad manufacturers' site

I'll let you know how it goes.
